The star attraction of Minneriya is undoubtedly its majestic Asian elephants. From July to October, visitors can witness an awe-inspiring gathering of up to 300 elephants near the ancient reservoir—feeding, bathing, and socializing in a breathtaking natural spectacle known as “The Gathering.” Beyond elephants, the park hosts an array of wildlife including elusive leopards, sloth bears, sambar deer, spotted deer, wild boars, and toque macaques. Bird lovers can spot over 160 species, such as painted storks, pelicans, and Sri Lankan junglefowl. Reptiles like water monitors and mugger crocodiles further enrich Minneriya’s incredible biodiversity and untamed charm.
At the heart of the park lies the historic Minneriya Tank, a massive man-made reservoir built by King Mahasen in the 3rd century AD. This ancient feat of engineering sustains the park’s vibrant wildlife during the dry months, turning the landscape into a dynamic and ever-changing wildlife theater.

While Minneriya is beautiful year-round, the best time to visit is from July to October during “The Gathering.” The dry season draws large elephant herds to the tank, offering visitors front-row seats to this incredible wildlife phenomenon.
